Is community mapping still a thing?

Participants at SCAT workshops drawing community maps

Roughly two decades ago the SCAT field team was knee deep in community mapping workshops in the Northern Cape. The accompanying photos are from those workshops.

I was reminded of this time at a recent interview with Jeanette Mgomo, Coordinator of Kgatelopele Social Development Forum. She recalled how former SCAT fieldworker, Erna van der Westhuizen, taught her about the value of community mapping and assessments.

This participatory rural assessment methodology became widely practiced at the time. The SCAT field team was trained by the much loved and now sadly departed Mikki van Zyl. Mikki was an enthusiastic trainer who coached the team how to use the methodology and co-facilitated many of the workshops with grantees during that time.

Our practice has shifted from the needs based approach and we now use an asset based language.

During the last two quarters of 2019 the SCAT team hosted GBV (Gender Based Violence) workshops for all three provinces where SCAT is active – the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. The team used the ABCD (Asset Based Community Development) Methodology to help grantees to map the assets, capacities and relationships to strategise their GBV work.

Community mapping is still very much in use at SCAT. Is community mapping still a thing in your organisation? When was the last time you did one?
