He was the former chairperson of the Parliamentary Press Gallery association. Barry co–authored a book, "Render unto Kaiser – a Transkei dossier" He served as a Parliamentary Manager for Media Liaison and was the Editor in Chief at Jonathan Ball Publishers.

Barry passed away on Friday 21 July 2006 after a brave battle with cancer. His role on the Scat Trust will be missed as will his friendship and support.

"I knew Barry for 34 years, and it seemed to me that he lived by the same creed at the end of that time as at the beginning. Things were simply divided into the 'excellent' and the 'outrageous'. Now when I last saw him, in the hospice, and things were rather gloomy and going downhill, he was not able to speak much. But I asked him a direct question: 'Barry, what's the FOOD like here?' 'Excellent,' he replied, 'excellent.' And that is how I shall remember him." - Gordon Young
